The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Planner in our Natural Environment team. Reporting to the Coordinator Natural Environment and working with the other environmental planners in our team, you will use your skills and knowledge of biodiversity and the Victoria Planning Provisions (VPP) to provide high quality environmental planning advice and responses.
Combining your great communication and organisation skills with your technical expertise, you will support the team to protect the natural environment and contribute to biodiversity and environmental outcomes in our rapidly growing municipality.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess statutory planning referrals, strategic planning initiatives and other relevant documents to provide high quality and timely environmental planning responses within statutory timeframes.
- Provide specialist technical advice and education to internal and external stakeholders in relation to environmental management, native vegetation and biodiversity within the context of Melton and Victoria’s planning and legislative framework.
- Liaise with Commonwealth and State government agencies, non-government agencies, developers, and the community on a range of environmental planning issues.
- Support compliance investigations, conduct site inspections, provide expert advice and represent Council at VCAT and panel hearings on environmental compliance matters.
- Assist in monitoring and reporting on Council’s performance relating to biodiversity, the natural environment and environmental planning matters, including performing environmental / biodiversity assessments and offset reporting.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following:
- Tertiary qualification in conservation, natural resource management, environmental science, or related field with relevant experience or lesser formal qualification with substantial experience.
- Substantial environmental planning experience in a growth area.
- Highly developed biodiversity and native vegetation knowledge and ability to conduct and analyse complex ecological assessments.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- A current valid driver’s licence is essential.
