The Opportunity

The Environmental Health team is seeking an Environmental Health Technical Officer to assist the team in proactively protecting public health within the City of Melton by assisting with the enforcement of regulations and contributing to community well-being.

The successful applicant will play a key role in conducting inspections under relevant legislation, investigating customer requests, participating in program development, managing onsite wastewater, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and assisting the Environmental Health Officer’s as required. 

The role will report to the Senior Environmental Health Officer and will be liaising with both internal staff as well as residents and ratepayers, consultants, State Government Departments, Public Authorities and other Municipalities an Environmental Health Units.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties of an authorised officer under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 with frequent prior consultation with more senior employees.
  • Maintain appropriate and up to date records of all assessments, inspections and daily work activities performed.
  • Conduct Tobacco Act education visits and assist with the test purchasing program as required.
  • Assess and process Onsite Wastewater Management System (OWMS) applications, conduct site inspections, issue permits in line with EPA and council requirements, and investigate complaints related to OWMS.
  • Monitor, test and sample public swimming pools and spas as well as supporting Environmental Health Officers with routine food sampling as required.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Public/Environmental Health or a relevant field with little or no relevant work experience or lesser formal qualifications with relevant work skills and experience.
  • Experience in investigative work in a customer oriented position.
  • Able to read, interpret and enforce legislative requirements.
  • Investigation skills including collection of evidence such as interviews, photos and samples for analysis.
  • Current valid Victorian Driver’s Licence.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain an Employee Working with Children Check.
