The Opportunity
The Building Services Unit is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Building Surveyor to join our dynamic, high performing team. In this key role, you will support the Building Services Unit’s regulatory, administrative, and enforcement functions, working closely with the Municipal Building Surveyor, Team Leader Building Services and Building Inspectors.
You will contribute to ensuring Council meets its statutory obligations under the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2018, with a strong focus on promoting public safety and maintaining compliance across the built environment
Key Responsibilities
- Perform functions required of Council in the administration of the Building Act 1993, the Building Regulations 2018, the National Construction Code and any other relevant Acts, Regulations and Local Laws & Australian Standards.
- Provide specialist technical advice and support to the Municipal Building Surveyor, Team Leader Building Services and Building Inspectors, by carrying out accurate and timely technical assessments of report and consent applications, place of public entertainment applications and protection of the public (Regulation 116) applications.
- Assist with the carrying out of accurate and timely inspections, building control, report and consent assessments and compliance audits to determine compliance with the relevant building control legislation, and may make decision recommendations in relation to same.
- Prepare accurate and timely reports, correspondence, and advice on building control matters relevant to Council’s responsibilities.
- Respond promptly and courteously to enquiries from internal and external stakeholders, in line with Council policies and procedures.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following:
- Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying or Degree with relevant experience in a similar field or role, so as to qualify for registration as a building surveyor or building inspector with the Building Plumbing Commission.
- Sound knowledge of the Building Act, Building Regulations, National Construction Code and Relevant Australian Standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Sound knowledge and relevant experience in the building industry, Local Government and private building surveying with good working knowledge of statutory applications and building enforcement provisions of the Building Act and Building Regulations.
- Current valid Victorian Driver’s Licence.
- White card (Construction Induction Training)
